how it works

the process

the process

So, you finally feel confident you can start your fostering journey but you’re not sure about the next step. Here’s how the fostering process works in Powys.

the first step

The first step is an easy one: your journey starts by picking up the phone or sending that email to our team. It may not feel like a big step but it’s the most important one you’ll make.

the home visit

Once you’ve been in contact with us, we’ll start to get to know all about you – your home, family situation and what’s important to you. There’ll be some paperwork to fill out too then, if COVD-19 restrictions allow, we’ll pop round to visit you. If we can’t, we’ll arrange a video call with you.

the training

It’s here that you begin your very first training course. Known as “Skills to Foster” or sometimes “Preparation to Foster”, this three-day course is designed as an introduction to your role as a foster carer.

Here, you’ll learn all about fostering and what it might mean for you. You’ll also meet members of our Powys team, and lots of fellow foster carers. You’ll start to build up important connections that will last.

the assessment

The next step in your journey is the assessment where you’ll learn more about what fostering will really mean to you and your loved ones. We promise it isn’t a test at all. We just want to explore how you and your family work, let you ask any questions you might have and share anything that’s on your mind.

All assessments do really is understand the strengths and vulnerabilities of your family and are all conducted by professional social workers. We want to prepare you for the rewarding and challenging experiences that fostering could bring you.

the panel

Once your assessment has been carried out, it will be shared with our panel here at Foster Wales Powys. Each of our 22 local teams have a panel which is made up of independent members, social workers and experienced foster carers who consider each potential foster carer as an individual.

The purpose of the panel isn’t to cancel or approve you as a foster carer. Instead, they make suggestions and recommendations about how fostering might fit into your life.

the foster care agreement

Once your assessment has been approved by the fostering panel, we sign the foster care agreement. This agreement sets out what it means for you to be a foster carer, from the everyday responsibilities to the support and ongoing guidance you’ll provide. It also outlines the services and support we’ll have available for you too, as your support network.
