Step up step down fostering is a type of fostering where foster carers offer mentoring to families. The families have been identified by social workers as needing support, and the families volunteer to take part.
Known as a family support foster carer, you’ll meet weekly to support the family to set and review goals. This gives parents support and time to address their challenges.
You’ll form a relationship with the whole family; from being available to offer crisis response support to families in the form of phone calls, visits or crisis short breaks to helping with family activities, such as outings, family activities, summer schemes and residentials.
Once a month, you’ll offer a planned short break , where the child or children will stay with you, typically for a weekend.

- Behaviour Management,
- Access to support,
- Family Relationships,
- Dealing with Crisis Situations,
- Play and Stimulation.
You’ll empower parents to make a change and help children to remain at home with their families and thrive.
