the story of

mel and mike

Mel and Mike’s journey as Foster Carers began over 14 years ago, encouraged by their own kids who had friends that were fostered, says Mike. “They thought we’d be great at fostering, so they encouraged us to give it a go. That’s how it all started.”

After making initial inquiries with the local authority, Mike and Mel completed the “Skills to Foster” course. Over six months, a social worker got to know them, their friends, and their family, building a comprehensive picture of what they could bring to the fostering service.

part of a loving family

Mike and Mel believe the best part of fostering is showing young people that there is a different way to live.

“Being part of a warm, loving family is something many children have never experienced” Mel explains. “They are often shocked by the simple things we take for granted: a nice room, good food, clean clothes, and a caring environment.”

better people

Fostering has not only changed the lives of the children in their care but has also made Mike and Mel better people, they said.

“It makes you more accepting and makes you more empathic towards other people’s situations and experiences.”

Mike adds, “We don’t judge as quickly as we used to. We just want to make a difference. These children are with us for a reason – they’ve had a tough start. If we can make things a little better for them, then we’ve succeeded.”

Each child’s story and outcome are different, but Mike and Mel take pride in providing a warm, loving family home, even if just for a few years.
